I didn’t even know that a Cupcake Throw Down was a thing until I was invited to go with a friend. I know that cupcakes were trendy for awhile, but now people are kind of sick of them since they became so over exposed. I personally believe that anything you can make with an easy bake oven probably doesn’t deserve that much attention.
The Cupcake Throw Down was at Fortune Sound Club, which should have been my first clue that this wasn’t go to be a hoity toity affair with tea drinking and pinkie waving all over the place. The idea is that your entrance fee gets you four tickets so you can try different cupcakes. When we got to the Throw Down the room was dark, the music was loud and it was so hot I had to check my coat; basically it was like going to a club except there was icing sugar all over everything.
So right from the start I was prepared to dislike everything. And then, the unthinkable happened: the girl at the entrance had accidentally given me double tickets! Suddenly I could try eight cupcakes instead of four, oh glorious day! Except…after trying a few cupcakes (gluten free, natch) I was pretty much ready to go. So I packed up a container (provided at the club, which was a nice touch) and brought the rest of the cupcakes home to That Guy I Know:
They were almost too adorable to eat, but TGIK totally ate them all. And he washed the cupcakes down with beer, which is completely gross by the way. My overall takeaway from this experience is that clubs and baked goods don’t really mix. I would go back if next year it was in a quieter venue and they actually did things like have a cooking demonstration – you know, stuff that is actually related to cupcakes…just a thought.
